Tropical modernism, translated to the Arabian Gulf.

While most of Studio Graf's work is based in the United States, international commissions bring welcome exposure to different perspectives, cultures, and constraints. This project was also an opportunity to tap back into earlier work in the Middle East, a region that has long adopted an international design language while retaining materials, features, and climatic sensibilities distinct to its place.

Studio Graf served as creative design lead on a gated beachfront villa community on Saadiyat Island, a natural island off Abu Dhabi's coastline and home to the city's growing cultural district. The commission came through RSP Architects, a Dubai-based international design firm, who engaged Studio Graf to lead the design of a competitive development proposal. RSP's Dubai team produced the full submission package.

The brief called for a medium-density residential community across a 118,000-square-metre site, with four-, five-, and six-bedroom beachfront villas set directly on white sand, surrounded by landscaped gardens, and supported by community facilities, retail, and resort-style amenities.

Designed on the principles of tropical modernism: modern spatial planning, layered with the materials and passive strategies of traditional Gulf architecture.

The design combines wide, open interiors with strong indoor-outdoor connection, calibrated for the coastal climate and lifestyle. Locally suited landscape elements, including date palms and bougainvillea, help create a comfortable micro-climate around each villa while grounding the architecture in its regional setting.
